Geography
BackAt Excelsior, our Geography curriculum is designed to foster a deep, lasting understanding of the world, beginning with the familiar and building towards the global. It is ambitious, inclusive, and explicitly sequenced to ensure all pupils, regardless of background or prior attainment, can access, retain, and apply powerful geographical knowledge and skills.
We begin with our local environment to connect pupils to their community and gradually broaden their horizons to include national and global challenges, enabling them to make sense of place, identity, and global interdependence.
By weaving together case studies (from Newcastle to Mumbai, the River Tyne to the African continent), enquiry-based fieldwork, and rich geographical vocabulary, our curriculum meets and exceeds National Curriculum expectations. It equips pupils not only with academic knowledge, but also with critical thinking, curiosity, cultural capital, and the confidence to engage with the issues that shape their world. This lays a secure foundation for success at GCSE and beyond.

Key Stage 3 and 4
Aims of our Key Stage 3 curriculum
By the end of KS3, pupils will be well-prepared for the demands of GCSE Geography and will possess a deep appreciation of how geography shapes their lives, their communities, and the wider world. This will involve underpinning geographical concepts throughout KS3 such as Place - understanding the characteristics of different locations, Space – exploring how geographical phenomena are distributed, Interdependence – recognising connections between people, places, and environments, Environmental Interaction – examining how humans interact with the physical world, Sustainability – evaluating how to manage resources for the future, Change Over Time – identifying how environments and societies evolve.
Aims of Key Stage 4 curriculum
The aim of Excelsior’s Key Stage 4 (KS4) curriculum, based on Eduqas A, is to provide pupils with a broad and balanced education that deepens their knowledge and understanding of key subjects while preparing them for further study and future opportunities. It focuses on developing critical thinking and analytical skills. The curriculum encourages independent learning, creativity, and personal development, developing their wider knowledge and understanding of global geography.
